Treatment

TrueNTH in the UK is a partnership of HCPs, academics and volunteers, aiming to improve lives of men with prostate cancer

TrueNTH is a three-year programme with eight survivorship projects aimed at improving the lives of men living with prostate cancer, as well as the experience of their partners, carers and family members.

Two of the eight ongoing projects are particularly relevant to helping men who are starting out on active surveillance:

Decision Support: Understanding Consequences

Currently evaluating a three-part intervention (involving online training for clinicians, signposting to decision aids, and offering patients recordings of consultations), to improve decision support and reduce regret for men with low- and intermediate-risk prostate cancer. Results will be available in 2019.

Supported Self-Management: IT solutions for active surveillance

Supported Self-Management aims to use the latest technology to link a man to his care team, without expensive hospital follow-up visits. This will quickly identify patients needing help, saving time and contributing to a more efficient care system.

Supported Self-Management: IT solutions for active surveillance

This project was led by the University of Southampton, in partnership with the University of Surrey and five NHS health trusts in England. This project has transformed the follow-up care pathway. Men whose care is managed through this new programme:

  • Have an online service for checking test results, completing assessments, viewing information and messaging their clinical team.
  • Have a Support Worker for the duration of their follow-up care.

  • Attend a supported self-management workshop to develop knowledge, skills and confidence to self-manage their condition.

  • Need not attend routine appointments unless an issue arises.

  • Continue being closely monitored by their clinical team.
