This webinar, led by Dr. Sam Merriel, GP, NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer and Associate Editor at the British Journal of General Practice, will equip primary care professionals with the knowledge and tools to identify men at higher risk of prostate cancer, understand the nuances of PSA testing, and navigate changes in diagnostic pathways. Emphasis will also be placed on recognising and addressing health inequalities, particularly among Black men and other high-risk groups. Participants will gain practical strategies to support informed decision-making and improve patient outcomes, including how to use DRE appropriately in asymptomatic men and where to access reliable information for clinicians and patients.
The session will be chaired by Dr. Anand Patel, GP Partner and Trainer in Stockwell, London, and Clinician at the Centre for Men’s Health, who will guide the discussion and support audience engagement.
*ADDITONAL INFORMATION TO BE AWARE OF IN CONJUNCTION WITH the question asked at the 29 minute mark: “Does not ejaculating increase your risk of prostate cancer?”
‘Current evidence suggests that more frequent ejaculation (whether through sex, masturbation, or nocturnal emission) may be linked to a reduced risk of prostate cancer. A Harvard study found that men who ejaculated 21 times or more per month across three points during their lifetime had a 31% lower risk compared with those ejaculating 4–7 times per month. However, these studies have important limitations, and this should not be seen as a guarantee of protection. More research is needed before clear recommendations can be made.’
